Mike 56-3391 F-100F 3MILES SE OF RAF WETHERSFIELD UK 1 KILLED Having looked through your excellent website, I have an incident which I cannot find there, and you may be able to help with. It involves the crash of an F-100 of the 55th TFS, 20th TFW at Gosfield on . The crew both ejected but only one survived. The man killed was Wendell J Kelly, and there is a small memorial to him in the village playing field at Gosfield. Any info at all that you have on this is very much appreciated. Thanks Andrew Endean
Thanks for the e-mail mike. This adds to the little information I have. The serial number etc can be found at home.att.net/~jbaugher/1955.html , which lists the numbers of USAF aircraft, and fate of some of them. The memorial was put up since Kelly guided the aircraft away from Gosfield village, it was this action which cost him his life. I have contacted one local paper, which was around at the time of the crash, only to be told they do not keep back issues. So much for history! I do live in Gosfield, but few of the residents have any recollection of the incident. If any other info comes my way I'll pass it on to you Thanks again Andrew Endean
Hi there! Further to my e-mail to you about the 20th TFW ejection, I found some further info in 'North American F-100 Super Sabre', by Peter Davies and David Menard. The date they give is different for the incident, (23rd Jan), but the rest ties up. It seems Col Kelly was carrying out an instrument checkout for another pilot, 1st Lt Paul Briggs. At 30,000ft the aircraft had a compressor failure, and Kelly turned back for Wethersfield. On the approach at 4500ft and 6 miles out, another explosion occured which caused Col Kelly to cease both the approach and his attempts to restart the engine. He steered the aircraft away from various villages (including Gosfield, where he and his family lived), and at 1500ft ordered 1st Lt Briggs to eject. The aircraft crashed shortly after this, and Col Kelly evidently ejected too late to survive. Hope this of some help, I'll continue the research and give you anything else I find. Best wishes Andrew Endean

| FEEDBACK |
In reference to XN 504/34 14 March 1963 you ask "who was who?" of the two surviving lieutenants who ejected from an RAF jet Provost. One, I see, was named "A T Pinney", and I suggest that of the two he was probably the instructor. An officer of that name was awarded RN pilot's wings in 1956. in email 20th March 2008 |

| 15th March 1963 | NASA | M2-F1 |
The M2-F1 was fitted with an ejection seat before the airtow flights began. The project selected the seat used in the T-37 as modified by the Weber Company to use a rocket rather than a ballistic charge for ejection. To test the ejection seat, the Flight Research Center's Dick Klein constructed a plywood mockup of the M2-F1's top deck and canopy. On the first firings, the test was unsuccessful, but on the final test the dummy in the seat landed safely. The M2-F1 ejection seat was later used in the two Lunar Landing Research Vehicles and the three Lunar Landing Training Vehicles. Three of them crashed, but in each case the pilot ejected from the vehicle successfully. ![]() NASA Photo: EC97-44183-4 M2-F1 ejection seat test at South Edwards |

... The pilot was W. Newby Kelt Lt Cmdr he ejected off the Enterprise CVAN65 he was with DET 65 from VFP 62. The ship was turning into the wind the deck was very slick with oil and the aircraft slid off from the angle deck catapult. Lt Cmdr Kelt ejected safely and flew again. This was a very low level ejection. I was assigned to Det 65 VFP62 and on the deck at the time and watched it happen it was an event I will never forget. As I recall watching, it appeared to happen in slow motion.

Notes from web: While one sortie was in-flight refueling over the Pacific Ocean, Maj Tooker’s F8E caught fire and he had to bail out He was in the water about 20 minutes and the raft 20 minutes and was picked up by a Navy Destroyer. The next day, LT Judkins F8E caught fire at 15,000 feet and his canopy and Martin Baker seat did not function. he manually bailed out and his chute did not deploy. Incredibility he survived the 15,000 foot free fall.

Testing the operational parameters of the aircraft General Chuck Yeager had taken the aircraft to 108,000ft. in the morning. On the second flight fight in the afternoon went over the arc at 104,000ft. and went into a spin. After 14 spins he ejected. Landed near Highway 6. photo courtesy of Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager
1963 - Chuck Yeager's ejection was on December
10th, not the 12th... Reference - http://www.check-six.com/Crash_Sites/NF-104A_crash_site.htm
And I have a QuickTime movie of his flat spin
and ejection if you're interested.

The task of the Detachment 52 was close-air-support (CAS) for the Army in Guine, and Sabres saw much combat. By 1964, when they were returned to Portugal due to US pressure, they flew 577 sorties, of which 430 were of ground attack and close air support nature. In the course of these operations, FAP Sabres suffered two losses: in August 1962, 5314 overshot the runway during emergency landing with bombs still attached on underwing hardpoints and burned out, while in May 1963, 5322 was shot down by guerrilla (pilot ejected safely and was recovered shortly after). Several others suffered combat damage of various degree, but were subsequently repaired.
