| FEEDBACK |
Your 15 Feb 91 A6 ejection with J. Williams as pilot description is not
accurate. 'Mac' Williams is my daughter's godfather and he did not crash into
the carrier. He lost all brakes taxiing out of the wires and the plane veered to
the left. They ejected before it went over the side. Mac broke his leg landing
on the carrier deck. details amended 13th November 2007 |

Crews view of the airfield was obscured due to burning oild field smoke. Pilot made three approaches to land. Both crew, Capt. A. Barandi and Spc. Littleton made a planned ejection after they were vectored to the ejection area and cleaned up the cockpit. Pilot sustained stained stomach muscles and back. Admitted to the 12th Evacuation hospital for evaluation and treatment. He was released 2 days later to full duty. T.O. received minor facial injuries.
"On
the 3rd
approach I had to break off as the aircraft (listed above mine) crashed on the
runway and
I
therefore
was denied permission to land.
The other aircraft
was
an OV-1D Mohawk
68-15962 whom I had been flying a
2-ship mission with. They did not eject. Fortunately, both survived (CW2 John
Adaway and SFC Dwayne Brightwell) with no injuries".

FEEDBACK |
|
Wanted to let you know that the A-4 fatality on 2-10-91 was my friend (and everybody's) Cdr. John "Bug" Roach. I saw Bug less than a month before his death, and he had the world by the tail. As the navy's senior LSO he was a limited duty officer. He grinned beneath his mustache and said,"Long as I pass the physical they gotta fly me." He'd managed 40-odd Desert Storm missions but told me "I'm swearing off war to teach the young guys." One of a kind, muchly missed. There was also a civilian A-4 ejection fatality in Utah about two years ago, operated by Advanced Training Systems International here in Arizona.

Here is a clarification of the aircraft that the 401TFW(P) / 614TFS 'Lucky Devils' lost in the Gulf War.
Jeff 'Tico' Tice was flying 87-0257 on the 19th of January when he was hit with a SAM-6 over Baghdad. His aircraft made it quite a way before he was forced to eject. Mike 'Cujo' Roberts was in 87-0228 when he was shot down by a direct SAM hit over Baghdad on the same mission. Jon Ball was flying 87-0224 later during the war (I believe on the 21st of January, although I may be wrong) when a Mk. 84 bomb exploded as it left the aircraft on a strike mission over Kuwait. Jon was almost immediatly picked up by a Navy helo and returned with very minor injuries. Visit the Lucky Devils in the Gulf War at:

I really like your site. I've been an aircraft engineer all my life and I still think that the bang seat is the smartest bit of kit on the aircraft. Can I just comment on a couple of your Tornado entries:- With regards to the Tornado entry for 14 Feb 1991, The aircrew were in fact XV Sqn and were operating from Muharraq International airport in Bahrain. It was a XV Sqn detachment but the aircraft used were pooled from the entire Tornado fleet. Some aircrew were also pooled from 17F Sqn and 617 Sqn. I was a groundcrew member on that operation and I can confirm that Rupert Brooks and Steve Hicks were XV Sqn aircrew. Steve Hicks was "command ejected" by his pilot but he had been fatally wounded by shrapnel from the exploding SAM. On your next Tornado entry dated 10 May 1991, you correctly note that the pilot was ejected by his navigator. I can give you a little more detail to this story. The pilot, Pablo Mason was quite a flamboyant character and possibly overconfident of his own abilities. The nav, Rob Woods was quiet and professional. The nav had claimed that the aircraft was out of control at low level and he initiated command ejection for himself and the pilot. The pilot admitted that the aircraft was out of control but claimed that he was regaining control when the nav banged them out. He blamed the nav for the accident. The board of enquiry, with the benefit of the flight data recorder, confirmed that the aircraft would not have recovered and that the nav had undoubtedly saved the pilots life. Pablo Mason went on to sell his Gulf war stories to the tabloids and said some unpleasant things about his fellow aircrew. With regards to the entry for 17 Jan 1991, John Peters and John Nichol were also XV Sqn aircrew on the XV Sqn detachment to Muharraq International airport in Bahrain. Hope this helps, -- Paul Giverin |
