![]() FEEDBACK |
My name is Mike Boyd, I was the pilot of F-14A 160656 on 31 MAR 1985. I visited your web site, and thought I would add a detail or two about our flight and subsequent ejection. We were assigned to Fighter Squadron 111 (VF-111) as part of Carrier Air Wing 15 (CVW-15) deployed aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). You mentioned on your site that we suffered a hydraulic failure. We actually suffered a DUAL hydraulic failure at night over the Indian Ocean. We had been instructed to divert to Oman, but we realized that our fuel state combined with our near total lack of control would make said divert impossible. We ejected only after fuel starvation approx. 80 NM from CVN -70. Ours was the second dual hyd. failure in the history of the Tomcat. A year or two later VF-124 had a dual hyd. failure coming in to NAS Miramar. There was a student pilot in the back seat, and he was killed. The first F-14 dual hyd. failure was in 1970 at Calverton N.Y. The test pilot in the back seat was killed. My dual hydraulic failure was the only one of the three where no one was killed. I was a LT at the time and my Radar Intercept Officer was LT Mike DeMuch. I liked your site and thought I would add a little info. |
