RAF Canadair Sabre F-4 XB839/X of 26 Sqn. of 2 T.A.F dived into the ground from low level eight miles from Oldenberg, West Germany after take off.
The pilot, Flg. Off. F. H. Rickwood ejected at 1,000 ft approx., 350 kts , aircraft climbing – loss of control.
The seat/canopy function was unsatisfactory, the seat harness unfastened and the pilot was dragged back along the aircraft, struck the tail and was killed.
