On a day-instrument flight, during the take-off sequence the aircraft was struck by a flock of birds shortly after lift-off from the runway. The No. 1 [left] engine subsequently failed. The pilot unable to maintain altitude and airspeed elected to eject. The aircraft impacted on the ground 700 metres west of runway 26. The pilot and technical observer, CW3 R. R. Stevens and E6 J. W. Armstrong, landed aproximately 25 metres from the aircraft. Both were evacuated by ground ambulance to hospital.

Crashed in KS [?]. While on a service mission the pilot lowered the aircraft from a climb at 3,100ft. MSL and 165 KIAS. The No.2 engine lost power, exploded and the aircrft rolled right uncontrollably. Both the Technical Observer and Pilot ejected after the right roll exceded 90 degrees. Both ejections were successful and the aircraft exploded upon impact at the edge of a small village.

FEEDBACK

Interesting to note, all three of the others were picked up by the helo after landing on land. (A/C was rolling violently) I ejected upside down and was actually quite a bit lower than the other 3.  I landed about 25 ft from shore in the water, was dragged by my chute a bit in the high winds, and ultimately floundered my way ashore.

When the Navy rescue helo showed up, I refused to be taken up on the "hook", since I'd lost my helmet, otherwise all four would have been rescued by helicopter.  Two fishermen drove me up to the nearby Diamond Point private airport landing strip where we met the helo.  All were checked by an ambulance crew before being taken back to NAS Whidbey Island.

Warm regards,

Jim Coulson
