On a day-instrument flight, during the take-off sequence the aircraft was struck by a flock of birds shortly after lift-off from the runway. The No. 1 [left] engine subsequently failed. The pilot unable to maintain altitude and airspeed elected to eject. The aircraft impacted on the ground 700 metres west of runway 26. The pilot and technical observer, CW3 R. R. Stevens and E6 J. W. Armstrong, landed aproximately 25 metres from the aircraft. Both were evacuated by ground ambulance to hospital. |
