In the appendices of the book - Sir James Martin by Sarah Sharman there is a listing of over 6000 successful ejections using  Martin-Baker Ejection Seats. January 1973 begins with a list of 44 Classified ejections. The details of these are not available from Martin-Baker.

It is unlikley that there were so many ejections on one day when looking at ejection statistics.

From conversations with  sources in Israel it is known that  a composite list of ejections were reported from 1973 and previous conflicts and accidents. It is therefore reasonable to assume that some of the 44 refer to Israeli Defence Force, Air Force ejections throughout 1973 and earlier. Until further clarification is available this list will remain as the given information in the public domain. Known Israeli ejections will be listed and matched on the listing below for comparison.

THE MISSION

Captain Douglas K. Martin (pilot) and Captain Samuel L. James (weapons system officer), flying F-4E 67-0281, were marking a target in Cambodia with a smoke rocket on April 18, 1973. Radar contact was lost with the aircraft during the mission and no radio contact was made with the crew. Wingmen observed no explosion or parachutes, and no emergency radio signal "beepers" were heard. The wingmen did not see the plane go down, but they did observe a new swath cut through dense jungle nearby.

A subsequent 700-square-mile search was conducted for the aircraft. During the search for Martin and James, aerial photographs were taken of a probable crash site which revealed an ejection seat, wing debris and one main landing gear.

Hi:

I was the pilot who ejected from RA-5C Vigilante BuNo 156637 on July 23, 1973, while based at NAS Patuxent River, MD.  You can read a bit about in the attached article that was published in the June/July 2003 Smithsonian Air & Space magazine. The photo shows me presenting a bottle of whiskey to the Petty Officer Second Class who had pre-flighted the ejection seat (also seen in the photo).

On 24 November 1973 two Buccaneers were involved in a mid-air
collision in the Walker Bay area.

Can anyone on this forum assit or point in in a direction to obtain
the following information:

1. Aircraft Tail Numbers.
2. Crew (if possible who was in which aircraft).
3. Did the crew eject/fate of the crew?
4. Cause of accident.
5. Does any one have images of the aircraft involved in the accident.
6. Any supplementary information regarding the incident will be
helpful too.

Any leads/pointers/reply willbe highly appreciated.

Rgds,

Spice

1.  Tail Numbers 419 and 420

2.

3.  Two crew in each aircraft killed

4.  Cause – mid air collision / pilot error

5.

6.  I have the date of accident at November 25, 1973 – not sure if it was the 24th as you say, or 25th.  From what I recall there was only a small amount of floating wreckage.  The actual aircraft were never located.
Google Earth image of Walker Bay below

Hi Spice,
  24 November 1973.
  Tail numbers 419 and 420
  Maj.JJS.Steinberg Capt.H.duPreez Maj.CR.Vice Capt.BM.Antonis.
All four members were killed. I do not have the crew links to each aircraft but I know this was discussed on the group before and possibly some good member will let us have the links again. The aircraft were never found. (Only pieces of wreckage)
Only the body of Maj.Steinberg was found. The autopsy showed that he may have drowned, suggesting a "successful" ejection. It appears that they were due to attack HMS Tiger during a Capex exercise. They were given 20 minuites to hold before the attack during which the two aircraft entered mist and cloud over Walker Bay, opened thier formation but then collided in midair.
Others may be able to help further. This was the last Capex Exercise before the arms embargo, the Simonstown Agreement was still in place at the time.

Regards,
 Brian
