On June 21, 1972, CDR Sam Flynn, XO of the VF-31 Tomcatters, and his NFO, LT Bill John, were leading a section of F-4 Phantoms during the second alpha strike of the day by CVW-3 aboard USS Saratoga, operating from Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin. They had set up a barrier between Hanoi's Phuc Yen airfield and the strike group. The Phantom crew spotted a flight of three North Vietnamese MiG-21s. CDR Flynn was maneuvering into position to fire when his wingman reported he was under fire by enemy Atoll missiles from another MiG. Flynn broke off his engagement and maneuvered against the MiG-21 attacking his wingman. Flynn fired his Sidewinder and hit the MiG. Its tail blew off and the pilot ejected.

| FEEDBACK |
Here’s some more information on another ejection, 24 Aug 72 which is listed with minimal information on your website. The aircraft was a Marine Corps F-4B from VMFA-122 and the accident was caused by a hard-over nose wheel steering malfunction at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft departed the runway at high speed and struck the arresting gear equipment shearing one of the main landing gears. The RIO, 1Lt Mike Allen ejected as the aircraft started to roll over and was ejected into the ground (fortunately soft mud) at a very shallow angle surviving with serious back injuries. The Pilot, a 1Lt (I can’t remember his last name!) did not eject---as the aircraft came to rest inverted with the engines still running, his canopy was not able to jettison preventing his seat from firing, likely saving his life. Both recovered and returned to flying status.

While on a strike over North Vietnam during the night of 20–21 December 1972, a VA-196 A-6A (BuNo 155594) Commander Gordon R. Nakagawa, pilot, and Lieutenant Kenneth H. Higdon, bombardier/navigator, took AAA fire. Other aircraft in the area heard Nakagawa cry out that their Intruder was hit on the left wing and that they were bailing out at 0056. Other listeners heard a call sign, tentatively identified as Milestone 511 or 51, then silence. No emergency beepers were received, but a last tenuous voice contact was made with the downed crew at 0115, prior to both men being captured. Fortunately, Higdon was able to return home on 12 February 1973, and Nakagawa on the last flight of repatriated POWs, on 29 March 1973, and thence to his ship.
