Happened on your site.
 
I ejected from F8K Bureau Number 146937 after 42 (forty-two) second in a takeoff roll at El Toro on the short east/west runway on 22 January 1971. Had 3 afterburner explosions and left it at about 150 feet in the mung. Later discovered several burner pigtails were broke and high pressure fuel was being pumped around burner can. Martin baker seat worked like a hose, I swung once. LA Times was pissed because the plane didn't fall out of the sky in the Old Folks apartments close to the end of the runway. Only got 4 lines on front page. Got my tie about four years later from M/B rep at Farnbourgh.
 
I think the Squadron was still VMF 112 and not VMFA 112 (was changed a bit late). Squadron was from Navy Dallas Marine Reserve . I was Squadron CO and was the last flight out after a 14 day deployment. Nice way to spoil a deployment. Had to fly a transport home.

Eisenbeisz of the 389th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Phu Cat were flying a close air support mission near Ba Long, some 12 miles southwest of Quang Tri City. Their aircraft, F-4D #66-7473, was hit by automatic weapons fire while pulling off from their third pass. Pilot W. Cdr. F.J.L. Downing used face blind to eject aircraft staright and level at 14,000ft. at est. 250kt.After separation from the seat stabilised in free fall until parachute automaticaly opened. Crashed through tree and laned on his knees on steep slope. No ejection injuries but badly bruised left knee, broken right kneecap, minor injuries to right elbow. Navigator Flt. Lt. Pinches ejected at 14,000ft. at 290kt.. Crashed through tree,
suspended few feet from the ground in harness. Fractured 4 spinal vertebrae on ejecting, probably being caused by being hunched up on ejection when seat fired after second pull of
