Mike, I'm the survivor January 17, 1969 at Tchepone.

Vic Smith and I were both F-4 pilots though I was a back seater.

(My orders for the front seat came down the same day I went down.)

Vic probably got out of the aircraft but either his seat was damage, malfunctioned,

or there wasn't enough time. (He was listed MIA then presumed dead.)

I got out but was badly injured arms and one leg.  One night out in Laos, surrounded

by bad guys, rescue the next day then 10 months hospital, 2 years surgery and did not fly again.

Our airspeed was around 450 knots pulling out of a dive when we hit by 37mm that took off

the right wing.  The air blast in the ejection took off my helmet and mask, some strapped on equipment

and some whole pockets.  My injuries were probably flail injuries and in the air.  I don't know;

I woke up on the ground and had to figure things out from there.

The rescue is written up in the appendix of The Rescue of Bat 21 by Darrel D. Whitcomb .

A Note from The Virtual Wall

On the evening of 28 March 1969 an F-4D (tail number 66-8764) from the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Danang was shot down while attacking a supply and storage site about 6 miles south of Ban Naxa in the Plaine des Jarres, northern Laos. Both crewmen were killed in the crash. Although the area was infested with North Vietnamese troops, both bodies were recovered from the crash site. The men were Capt Robert D. Davenport of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Capt William P. Justice of Niagara Falls, NY.

Unlike earlier Air Force F-4s, the F-4D wasn't designed to be flown from the rear seat - it was intended to be operated by a pilot in the front seat and a weapons system operator in the aft cockpit. Captain Davenport flew the aircraft, while Captain Justice ran the weapons system.

The third Misty FAC to be shot down in 1969 was lost during a mission . Maj Standerfer and 1 Lt Veach were making their second dive on a target to mark it for a formation of F‑4s when their aircraft was hit by ground fire. Maj Standerfer headed southeast but after a few miles he and 1 Lt Veach had to eject and landed close to the border with South Vietnam. They were subsequently rescued by a USAF SAR helicopter. Maj Standerfer had landed in a tree and fallen to the ground and was further injured when he was dragged through the trees on the jungle penetrator as he was being rescued. His injuries caused him severe discomfort on the long Misty FAC missions and he returned to a normal F‑100 strike squadron to finish his tour.

On 12 April 1969 Captains Arnold Lamp and Charles Mattern of the 16th Tac Recon Squadron departed Ton San Nhut Air Base (near Saigon) in an RF-4C PHANTOM (tail number 67-0446). The Phantom went down while over Lam Dong Province, South Vietnam.

Captain Mattern was picked up by search and rescue forces. Captain Lamp was declared as Killed in Action, although his body was not recovered at the time - leading to the supposition that the circumstances of the crash were such that there was no chance of survival.

Almost 25 years later, on 13 December 1993, the Vietnamese government allowed repatriation of human remains thought to be those of Captain Lamp. On 19 July 1995, the U.S. government announced the positive identification of Captain Lamp's remains and he was returned to his family for burial on American soil.
