| FEEDBACK |
In your ejection by year, you have Feb 15, 1968, Crusader F-8E Buno: 150293 from VRF-32. I was with VRF-32 at the time, and the pilot was , he was my division officer and I believe he was coming out of NAS El Centro when the aircraft flamed out. Messed up his back pretty good. Glad he got out ok though, Mr. Henke was one heck of a nice guy, and good officer/pilot.

13-5-1968 Vietnam USN A-6 Intruder from USS Enterprise. Crew had just dropped bombs during a night raid over North Vietnam when, "We took a direct hit by some kind of detonating shell and part of the instrument panel exploded in the cockpit with a loud thud. I continued to break toward the sea and started to climb. About this time I saw a bright light in the mirror and turned to see what it was. The left wing had burst into flames. We were about ten miles inland, so our first objective was to get out over water. I also wanted to get as high as possible and perhaps starve the fire of oxygen and put it out." They were still more than 120 miles from their carrier. They flew over a search and rescue destroyer hoping to make it back to the Enterprise. They were joined by another Intruder that confirmed te wing was burning badly. Bremner climbed and levelled off at 35,000ft but the fire continued. When he flewlower the flames became brighter. "It was so bright around the aircrat that my night vision was ruined." The A-6 finally reached the Enterprise and passed over it at about 7,000ft. They still hoped to land on the Enterprise and Bremner flew the aircraft down to 2,000ft at slower speed and with flaps down. The ship's landing signal officer advised the crew to eject. Lt. John T. Fardy [BN] and Lt. Bruce B. Bremner ejected and were picked up by HC-1 Seasprite helicopter and were back on board within 30 minutes. [U. S. 9 May 1968: a MIG‑21 was shot down by an F‑4B (153036) of VF‑96 flown by Major John P. Hefferman, USAF and Lt (jg) Frank A. Schumacher. It had to be a satisfying moment for RIO Schumacher, who on Enterprise's previous cruise had been shot down and rescued (on 8 April 1967). Air Force exchange officer Hefferman was to suffer the indignity of seeing his name omitted from his own service's roster of aerial victories.

Although he suffered a broken leg upon shoot down, Lt. Mobley was tied, standing, to a pillar, was beaten, interrogated, displayed for public humiliation, and forced to dodge bricks and bamboo sticks for eight or nine hours. He was then put into a cell and after waiting many long agonizing hours for medical attention for his broken leg, he set the bone himself. Later his captors applied a splint. Months of solitary confinement and intermittent torture and interrogation sessions continued over the five years of his imprisonment. He is six foot one and during captivity his weight dropped to 120 pounds. |

Export Lightning Lost A Lightning on a test flight from BAC, Warton, crashed near the village of Pilling, near Lancaster, on September 4. The pilot, Mr John Cockburn, ejected and was saved. The aircraft was a Mk 53 single-seater, the variant on order for the air forces of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. According to a BAC statement, a malfunction developed shortly after take-off. The pilot headed out to sea, but eventually lost control and had to abandon the aircraft over land. The accident was seen by Mr J. L. Dell, BAC's chief test pilot at Preston, who was airborne in another Lightning at the time. Although the cause has not yet been ascertained, reports that the aircraft caught fire in the air have not been discounted FLIGHT 12th September 1968 p393 |

Regarding the USAF F-4D that crashed on September 19th 1968: The pilot became disoriented during a night approach to Ubon AB, Thailand and flew into the trees. Pilot: Major Roger O. Clemens died. Backseat pilot, 1Lt Pete Nash was ejected through the canopy (this isn’t supposed to happen but it did), his chute streamed and he landed in the trees, severely injured but survived. He went to medical school, became a flight surgeon and eventually got back on flight status as a dual qualified pilot/flight surgeon. in email 2nd July 2009 |

| FEEDBACK |
Hi, I found your website and was an eyewitness to one of the accidents and
ejections.
23 SEP 68
66-0040 F-111A 474th TFW Nellis AFB, NV.
At the time, I was a USAF pilot assigned to the 428th TFS of the 474th TFW
and was in training as a "right-seater," in the F-111A. I was between
classes and was having coffee at the squadron on the flightline at Nellis
AFB, NV., when we heard on the squadron radio that the 'accident' aircraft
was having problems and was returning to base.
As he got closer, we all went outside the building on the flightline side to
watch the approach and landing. We were right on the edge of the parking
ramp and had a clear view as the aircraft approached the runway. As the
F-111 got closer to the ground, maybe 100-200 feet in the air, the nose
began to come up and we could hear the crew yelling on the radio that they
couldn't stop the nose from coming up.
At about that time, the aircraft rolled off to the left to about a 70-80
degree bank and with the fuselage parallel to the ground and in the steep
left bank, the capsule separated from the plane after the ejection sequence
was initiated. The aircraft had a strong warning in the Flight Manual about
keeping the weight of each crewmember within certain limits. This was due to
the fact that the entire cockpit was ejected and any large imbalance between
the left seat and the right seat could present problems upon ejection. This
was taken in consideration for crew assignments, but was not an issue during
the training phase with the instructor.
Luckily for this accident crew, there was a HUGE imbalance between the
student trainee in the left seat, and the instructor pilot in the right
seat. The ejection took place far outside the "safe parameters" for a
successful ejection due to the altitude, airspeed and bank angle. The left
seater was a classic slim and trim fighter pilot type and his instructor was
rather more rotund and much heavier.
Because of this big imbalance, the capsule trajectory started to lean toward
the heavier crewmember and this in fact made the capsule reach almost a
vertical path as the rocket motor propelled it high enough for the chute to
deploy and swing once before they hit the ground. If they had been the same
size, weight wise, they would have both perished.
Later, we were always crewed together based on similar size as that really
was the safest plan.

F-llls Grounded All USAF F-lllAs have been grounded following the accident to an F-111A on September 23 at Nellis AFB, Nev. The aircraft was on finals on a training flight, end was at a height of about 3OQft when it "began a smooth, slow pull-up." The pilots, one of whom was an RAAF trainee, ejected safely. To date 11 F-llls—nine F-lllAs and two F-lllBs—have crashed since January 1967 (see also page 548). FLIGHT 3rd October 1968 p517 F-lll Training Accident AUSTRALIAN INVOLVEMENT in the latest F-lll accident—ninth to occur to one of the Air Force versions of the aircraft— was reported to Parliament in Canberra last Thursday by the Minister for Air, Mr Gordon Freeth. He said that when the F-lll was between 100ft and 200ft up during an approach at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nev, "pitch up" and loss of control reportedly occurred. Both pilots, one of whom was an Australian under training, successfully ejected but the aircraft crashed and burned. In addition to these nine accidents to Air Force versions, there have been two involving Navy F-lllBs. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton, conceded Opposition demands that the financial aspects of the Australian agreement to buy 24 F-llls should be tabled and asked the Attorney- General, Mr Nigel Bowen, to try to separate the financial details from the classified parts of the contract. The Defence Minister, Mr Allen Fairhall, said he did not believe that Australia could cancel its contract to purchase 24 of the aircraft if more defects were found. He said he had not considered advising the Government to withdraw from the contract; however, he was not completely happy about the F-lll because of the defects. FLIGHT 3rd October 1968 p548-549
