| "During the second flight flight a problem emerged when the rocket booster wouldn't separate after burnout. This was a cause for concern because there was no way to land the jet with an empty rocket bottle dangling from it like some kind of malignancy. Al Blackburn flew around for an hour and a half trying various tricks to nudge the thing loose, but nothing worked. He finally ejected, somersaulted, and made a rough landing in a 35-mph wind. Vulcan B.1/B.1A XA908 en route from Goose Bay to Lincoln AFB, Nebraska when it suffered total electrical failure while flying at 35,000' over Dresden, some 60 miles north of Detroit. Instead of supplying back up power for about 20 minutes (enough time to divert to Kellog Field AFB, Michigan) tyhe emergency battery faled after only three minutes. The resultant total failure of the electrical system locked the control surfaces and the control surfaces and the aircraft entered a 60 degree dive. It crashed into a residential area in Detroit totally demolishing five houses. Only the Co-pilot ejected and he was drowned on landing in lake St. Clair. |
