POW

Ed didn't actually eject.  Newton's First Law of Motion applied. He was thrown out of the aircraft, unexpectedly.  He had opened the canopy, released all his fittings (oxygen, radio cords,   seat and shoulder belts, etc.) as he prepared to bail out (no ejection system in the A1*). Suddenly, he was flying through space (at night, low altitude  about 200 feet over ground).  He wingman saw his aircraft pitch into the  ground and explode.  Ed was reported KIA.  His wingman was sure of it.  Ed  pulled the rip cord, took a swing in the chute, and landed.  Two years later his family found out he was alive.

*Later A-1's were fitted with the Stanley Parachute Extraction System
