At approximately 4.pm on 18th May 1968 an RF-4C Phantom II, call sign "Vacuum,"  of 14 TRS 432 TRW United States Air Force was shot down at Quang Binh near Dong Hoi on coast of North Vietnam on a single aircraft day airborne alert photo reconnaissance mission.

Captain Terry Jun Uyeyama was deployed with the 14th TRS from Bergstrom AFB to Udorn, Thailand. flying his 101st mission. With him as his GIB was Tommy Emerson Gist.

It is known that Terry Uyeyama activated the ejection system. He  is certain  that his GIB was killed in action,  hit in the aircraft,  was ejected and again hit by NV ground fire.
Captain Uyeyama identified Gist's ID card while in captivity. He never saw Tommy Gist again. He would spend  until 14th March 1973 in captivity.
