F3 crew saved in ditching drama

AN RAF Tornado crew from Leuchars ejected safely from their F3 jet before it crashed into the North Sea.

The 111 Squadron aircraft was on a routine sortie to Leeming on October 14 when the incident occurred.

A Leuchars spokesman said: "It was seen to take off and start to climb to medium level over the sea, but a few minutes later air traffic control lost contact with the jet and a search‑and‑rescue operation was immediately launched.

"Sea King helicopters from A Flight, 202 Squadron at Boulmer and Gannet were quickly on the scene as were lifeboats from Broughty Ferry and Anstruther. The location of the crash site is 10 miles east of Leuchars in the North Sea.

"Both crew members ejected safely and were airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for initial assessment.

"It has been confirmed that they only suffered minor injuries but as a precautionary measure, and in accordance with RAF policy, they were transferred by Sea King to a specialist unit in Nottingham for post ejection investigations.

"This is a routine procedure. A board of inquiry has been convened."

The Boulmer‑based Sea King crew were Fg Off Adam Shipley, Sqn Ldr lain Macfarlane (OC A Flight), MACr Graham Maving and Sgt Simon Price.

Meanwhile, a Tornado GR4 from Lossiemouth had to divert to Stomoway after sensors indicated a rear fuselage fire.

The 12 Squadron crew was on a training sortie on October 18 when they landed without injury. As RAF News went to press, an operation was underway to repair the aircraft and return it to base.
