Tuesday, 24th July 2001 - Sri Lanka's Katunayake airbase and Bandaranaike International Airport
At approximately 3-30 a.m. during Tuesday morning Sri Lanka's military air base and civilian international airport were infiltrated by Tamil Tigers [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)]. Using explosives, rpg's, shoulder launched anti-tank weapons and small arms they were able to destroy several aircraft and damage a significant number of others that were one the runways or open areas. It appears two may have been damaged within the military hangars at Katunayake airbase. Eight
Tamil Tigers and three air force officers died in the battle at the air base. A
further Six Tamil Tigers died at the airport. 12 others who were injured,
