Two more bodies found at Baeza plane crash scene
Saturday, September 3, 2005

The charred remains of a woman and an eight month old baby have been found among the debris of a three storey house in Baeza into which a military training plane crashed at 12.45pm yesterday. The search continues for clothing or documentation which may help investigators to confirm the victims' identities.

The body of the pilot, Captain José Francisco Canezas Torres, who was based at the General Air Academy in San Javier (Murcia), was found yesterday. It seems that he had strayed from his flight path to overfly his home town, to wave to his mother, who would come out onto her balcony to return the wave.

Defence minister José Bono, who visited the crash scene yesterday evening, confirmed that the pilot "was breaking the rules," and "was flying outside the designated sector." It was not the first time this had happened and Captain Cabezas was reprimanded after a similar incident in 1998. A local man told reporters yesterday that everyone in the town knew that whenever a military plane was heard flying over the town, that it was "the Cabezas boy."

Air force pilot dies in Baeza town centre crash
Friday, September 2, 2005

Defence minister José Bono has confirmed that the pilot of the military plane which crashed in Baeza town centre at 12.45pm has died.

The plane was a Casa-101 training model, and the pilot has been identified as Captain José Francisco Cabezas Torres.

Eye-witnesses at the scene claim that the remains of a parachute, and what might be a body, can be seen on the roof of the two storey house into which the plane crashed, which is located at number 9, calle San Ildefonso.

Firemen are dealing with a serious blaze at the house next door to the one where the plane crashed.

Rescue teams are looking for two people, who it is believed may be a mother and young daughter, who live in one buildings damaged in the crash.

FEEDBACK

Hi!

I sent you a few notes some months ago and I would like to help you complete the info on the Spanish listings:

Mirage IIIEE/BE: All the planes were fitted with Hispano Martin Baker Mk4 seats

 Mirage F-1 series:

The Mirage F-1CE and EE were till 1986 or so fitted with the Hispano Martin Baker Mk4. Them all were upgraded to Mk6 standards. Thus the Mirage F-1M is fitted with the Mk6

The Mirage F-1BE were/are fitted with the Martin Baker Mk10

McDonnel F-4C/RF-4C: Martin Baker Mk H5 seats. The RF-4C were fitted with upgraded Mk H7 seats

Spanish F-18 Hornet: Martin Baker Mk10 seats

FEEDBACK

Mr.Bennett,

I was stationed in Manises AB for 13 years with the Ala No. 11. I'm addressing you about the data in your web regarding the crash of the Spanish Mirage III DE on December 16, 1970. The aircraft involved can't be the CE.11-16 as long as there was no such aircraft. The Spanish Mirage III double seatters (CE.11) were numbered from CE.11-25 to CE.11-30 and the single seatters (C.11) were C.11-01 to C.11-24. The C.11-16 was a single seatter written off in late 80s after a crash landing in Manises Air Base, Valencia.

The aircraft involved in the ejection was most likely the first CE.11-30. I know there was a crash of a CE in the first months of Mirage III operation out of Manises AB and a new one was bought and given the same tail number. Is interesting that both the Mirage III DE crashed had the same tail number.

Regarding the information of another Mirage III accident in your web (August 7, 1979) I have to say that there was no C.11 with the Squadron number 122-06. That plane must be the 112-06, tail No. C.11-12. As a matter of fact the pair tail numbers were assigned to the 112 Sqdn. and the odd ones to the 111 Sqdn. The pilot ejected in this accident was latter Chief of Staff of the EdelA. The 122-06 was a F4-C Phantom II of Ala No. 12, Torrejon AB (Madrid).

I hope this information should be useful to you.
Regards.

Mike, before you update!!

I was wondering about the H5 seat on the F-4C. Checked US update dates (from 1967) and a Spanish colleague who confirmed the fact the F-4C were indeed fitted with the MB Mk H7 seat since they were received, both the C and the F models. So all the ejections were with H7 seats!

The seat fitted to the Mirage III and early Mirage F-1s was offcially known as the Hispano Martin Baker RM4, being the standard Hispano made Mk 4 seat.

Los espacios naturales del Ministerio de Defensa The natural areas of the Defense Ministry

MoD owns many natural areas of high environmental value. The Ministry boasts that under his jurisdiction, it's like these spaces are more protected. In relation to the book published by the Ministry of Defense "Natural Areas of the Ministry of Defense came to say quite outrageous that" ecosystems training camps are barely maneuver and assaulted them and animal and plant species are best survival conditions than elsewhere. "

Since the Assembly Antimilitarism and Ecologists in Action believe that the use of military practices as a field of a farm is impossible that it is compatible with proper management of the same. We wonder how one can imagine that an area subject to military practices, that is, intended to destroy, to respect the natural environment. We believe that the spaces in which they perform military practices, in any case, can be considered as sustainable. Thus, the farms which manages the Defense Ministry and have a good state of preservation should be transferred to the Ministry of Environment or to whom appropriate (themselves affected municipalities) for their proper environmental and social management.

This is yet another example of how they are trying, steadily and deliberately, trying to make up each and every aspect of militarism. The arms industry also points to this delusional "image campaign": BAE SYSTEMS, one of the world's leading manufacturers of arms, is designing a new generation of ammunition "green", including a class of bullets and rockets "unleaded" those have been reduced toxins. The initiative is being supported by the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, which has also proposed a "weapons silent" to reduce noise pollution, and grenades that produce less smoke. It seems that even experiments has been designed to ascertain whether the explosives could be transformed into compost, in a shameful attempt by the arms industry to give a veneer green. Returning to the case at hand, we draw five examples that belie statements from the Ministry of Defense.

Ecologists in Action Leon has filed a complaint with the Minister of Defense by the wildfire in the range of El Teleno which lasted from the 20th to date September 24, 2005, burning almost the entire surface of the drop zone projectiles, ie around the 5,900 hectares of land.

Of these 5,900 hectares, about 2,500 were oak, Quercus petrea, Quercus pyrenaica, and hybrids, and birches, alders, small patches of holly, sabina tough, other species of fruit trees and native species endemic to serious problems of survival because of the fires. Otras 2.400 hectáreas pertenecían a la ZEPA ES4130022 Montes Aquilanos. Other 2,400 hectares belonging to the SPA ES4130022 Montes Aquilano. The fire did not attempt to shut down after 23 hours begin, as the authorities move to left field is not the means of extinguishing the fire. Probably this is because the objective was to increase the surface area burned, and thus be able to achieve a significant increase in firing live ammunition at this facility.

Already in the year 1998 about military maneuvers provoked burning 4,800 hectares of mature pine forests of Tabuyo, Nogarejas, Castrocontrigo and Torneros of Jamuz, leaving these people with no natural resources for many years. In addition, every year burn for this reason has about 1,000 inside the camp. All this shows that the ISO 14001 environmental guarantee has not worked and that it is only a veneer to the public.

The issue of security is another area of the weaknesses of the facility, as it is shooting with live ammunition over people, infrastructure and workplaces, in recent years there two facts that corroborate this danger. The first was the explosion on March 11, 1999, at the height of Boisan, a bomb. The second was also the explosion of a projectile. It took place on March 25, 2004 at the height of the river Luyego, while many people had different farming or ranching. In addition we found an unexploded shell in a very traveled outside the area of practice. Since the Assembly Antimilitarism and Ecologists in Action believe that the fire or explosions near populated areas are not the best ways, or caring for the environment, let alone the integrity of local populations.

The accident occurred about thirty shows the dangers of firing range in Las Bardenas. The list of casualties there estrellados planes, bombs missed and explosions outside the training area. These are known facts, despite the secrecy surrounding the military field.

Some accidents speak for themselves in the risk of this military installation. One example is the latest case, when a plane landed, only two seconds of flight Ejea de los Caballeros, a town of 15,000 inhabitants. The pilots repeatedly violate safety standards, such as the ban on over inhabited nuclei, as well as flights and night exercises. Such risks are compounded the usual inconvenience caused mainly by noise and vibration.

Never have been able to assess other environmental conditions such as air pollution, toxic and hazardous waste or use of depleted uranium. The hermetic military, and the minor issue that has attracted them to the various governments (central, regional, local), which has prevented today is known with certainty the type of weaponry being tested in the bombing Las Bardenas, and whether it can affect humans and the environment.

In any case, the Balkan syndrome (in which the soldiers who participated in that war presented diseases associated with the use of radioactive weapons) increased suspicions about the environmental impacts of practices on the range. According to official data on the incidence of cancer, the area of the Aragonese Five Villas (closer to the firing range) is well above the average, which makes suspect the possible use of depleted uranium shells in the interior firing range.

Relatamos below the spectacular history of accidents which account the range of the mountain Interests: June 1968 in an F-104 crashed in the vicinity of the town of Funes, Navarra; In July 1969 fell by F 100 in the town of Borja, Zaragoza; in August 1969 an airman died crashing to its F-100 in the shooting range; in May 1970 the same model aircraft crashed into Mount Moncayo, the pilot died; in August 1970 the two pilots of an F-4 Phantom to die down near the town of Sádaba in Zaragoza; in March 1972 two Phantom crashing in Buste, falling pieces of the plane in the village; in May 1972, Both drivers died after crashing a Phantom on Mount Yerga; in January 1973 a Phantom F-4 crashes on the range and its pilot dies; in March 1973 a queue of projectile fell near the village of Murillo's Fruit, in Navarra; in October 1973, an F-4 crashes in the vicinity of the shooting range; in August 1977 a plane Supersaeta falls in Las Bardenas and its pilot dies; in August 1977, an F-4 American from Base Rota, crashes in the same range; in September 1977 another Supersaeta falls on the estate and its occupant dies; in May 1979 a bomb from a F-4 Phantom falls on a campsite The Sotonera, Huesca; in August of 1979, a Mirage III crashed near the town of Arguedas in Navarra; in February 1980 a bomb fell within Valtierra, three kilometers away from the firing range; in March 1980 a F-4 crashes in Moncayo, dying its two pilots; in November 1980 fell 1 Phantom in Bandak, Navarre, a pilot dying; in January 1981 crashed in a Phantom Agoncillo, dying its two pilots; in August 1982 a helicopter collided with the hermitage of Yugo; in September 1982, an F-5 crashed into Cascante, Navarra, dying its occupant; in May of 1987 Phantom is a burning in the air falling in Bandak, Navarra, dying occupants; in August 1987 are collected three bombs in Peralta, Navarra; in February 1988 four fuel tanks emerging from an F-16 and fall to a thousand meters Cortes; in June 1989 two aircraft in the fall and Ejea of Cruceta the Knights, Zaragoza; in November 1989, an F-18 crashed in Plano, Las Bardenas, and its pilot dies; in August 1994, an F-18 falls near Piskerra, Las Bardenas; the March 13 in 2000, two F-18s collide in the air dropping to less than two kilometers from the city of Ejea de los Caballeros, which has a population of 15,000 inhabitants. Only two seconds of flight avoided catastrophe.

Again can be seen as the management of the range
