"Pakistan said Monday that its air force
had shot down a military plane 10 miles inside Pakistani airspace over
the Kurram salient, which borders on Paktia." |
| |
"The Afghan plane reported shot down on
Monday was apparently intercepted near
Parachinar, where Pakistan says six of
Kabul's planes carried out a bombing raid
Feb. 27 that left at least 50 people dead.
A Pakistani Defense Ministry spokesman said
the plane had fallen north of Parachinar and
that patrols had been sent to search for the
wreckage. He said witnesses saw no sign that
the plane's crew had bailed out.
Officials did not identify the downed
plane's type, but said it appeared to have
been on a reconnaissance mission because it
was flying alone."
|
| |
"The official Soviet news agency Tass today
said an Afghan plane shot down by Pakistan
on Monday bore military markings but was
unarmed and was carrying civilians on an
internal flight."

"Pakistani fighters shot
down an Afghan warplane that crossed into
Pakistan today, the Defense Ministry said,
and Afghan guerrillas said they had downed a
second plane.
In a statement issued by the
official Pakistani press agency, the Defense
Ministry said debris was seen falling into
the mountains north of Miranshah in the
North Waziristan tribal agency.
The Afghan fighter intruded
by six miles and was shot down by Pakistani
fighters, the ministry said.
Afghan insurgents said the
plane was apparently one of 16 that had been
bombing guerrilla positions just across the
border in Afghanistan.
Earlier, an official of the
Hezb-i-Islami rebel group said guerrillas
had shot down two of the planes. Later he
said that the guerrillas could claim only
one definite ''kill.'' The second plane
could be the one downed by the Pakistani
fighters, he said."

"Afghanistan said it shot
down the American-made F-16 after two F-16's
crossed the border at Khost district in
Paktia Province in the border area southwest
of Peshawar. It said the F-16's were at
first warned and then fired upon by Afghan
jets. Pakistan Reports Loss of Jet
Pakistan acknowledged that
one of its jets had been downed but
dismissed the Afghan version, saying that
its planes had never violated Afghan
airspace and were attacked in Pakistani
territory.
The Pakistani authorities
said the incident occurred Wednesday when
six Afghan aircraft violated Pakistani
airspace and two Pakistani jets intercepted
them. They said one jet was shot down over
the Pakistani town of Miram Shah. They said
the pilot bailed out and landed in Pakistani
territory uninjured. Islamabad also said the
downed plane could have been either an F-16,
which is one of the most advanced
American-made fighters, or an older
Chinese-designed F-6 jet."

Soviet Air Force Sukhoi-20 Fitter shot down 190 miles southwest of Islamabad
after straying over
the border from Afghanistan. Pilot ejected and was captured.
[afm s/6/88] Sqn. Ldr. Athar Bukhari of No. 14
Squardon (PAF Minhas) became the first PAF pilot to shoot down a Russian
aircraft. On August 04, 1988, Sqn. Ldr. Bukhari was asked to patrol near Bannu
at a height of 10,000 ft. He was vectored on a heading of 300 degrees, and the
controller reported the target 30 degree left, 15 NM. The contact was made and
the GCI controller clearly told Bukhari to go ahead and shoot the target. The
missile was launched from about 2.5 NM from the target which was soon followed
by a ball of fire. Descending to 5,000 feet, and dispensing chaff and flares,
the pilot then took a safe passage home.
The
wreckage of the shot down aircraft was located, but not the pilot. The tribal
people caught him the next evening and handed him over to the authorities. His
name was Colonel Alexander Rutskoi |

"The Soviet spokesman, in a rare conciliatory gesture,
thanked the Government in Islamabad for agreeing to return a Soviet
pilot shot down over Afghanistan early this month. Visit to the Embassy" |

"Pakistan said a Pakistani F-16 fighter shot down an
Su-22 fighter-bomber this morning when two Su-22's penetrated 10 miles
into Pakistan.
Pakistan said an Afghan pilot was captured and was being
questioned. Pakistani television showed film of wreckage near the
village of Thal, about 160 miles west of Islamabad.
Afghanistan's official Radio Kabul later said Pakistani
jets shot down an Afghan reconnaissance jet in the morning and a
training jet in the afternoon." |
| |
The missile barely left the
fighter when the pilot ejected and after a
few seconds the plane exploded and the
wreckage fell 10 NM from Thal on the bank
of river Kuram. The afghan pilot was later handed over to the afghan Gov.

"Thirty people were killed
when an Afghan transport plane was shot down
by Pakistan on Saturday, a broadcast on the
Afghan Government radio said today.
It said the pilot had lost
his way because of a technical problem
during a flight from Kabul, the Afghan
capital, to Jalalabad in the east and that
he had sought help from the nearest airport
in Pakistan.
''Not only was no help
provided, the plane was shot down by the
Pakistan Air Force,'' according to the
broadcast, monitored in Islamabad.
The Pakistani Defense
Ministry said Sunday that an intruding
Afghan plane was shot down by ground fire
near the northwestern town of Parachinar and
that everyone on board had been killed. A
ministry statement did not identify the
aircraft or say how many people had died."
