The initial prototype crashed during spin tests. The later prototypes incorporated new features to improve handling, including long strakes along the nose, and an extensively redesigned and enlarged tail. After these modifications, the USAF found the aircraft acceptable to their needs, and ordered it into production as the "T-37A".

LRF Accident
Back in the very early '70s a T-37 on a cross country took out the left wing of a 16TATS "E" model over the Cabot NDB at Little Rock. Does anybody have a better date for that accident and a tail number?

Mike

t had to have been Jan or Feb 1972. I was at LRAFB then and had friends in a trailor court that just missed getting hit.

Re: LRF Accident
Dennis, I'm sure you don't remember me but we got to the 345th at CCK about the same time. I was a brand new copilot. I think we flew together a few times.

KRF Accident in 72
The T-37 was on a preciision radar approach and the E was on an ADF letting down on the inbound leg and dropped onto the back of the Tweet. The radar controller had a narrow focus scope setting and never saw the Herk until it was too late. Both pilots in the Tweet were "ejected" and came out okay, but the Herk went in due to the damage to the engine and low speed/low altitude. It was from the school squadron - 16th at the time. Ironically I was good friends with both the Tweet pilot from college and Pilot Training and was close with the Herk pilot from the squadron. I didn't keep a record of the tail numbers...

Accident report says Herk on GCA, Tweet on localizer only non precision approach with tower cleared to land.

Re: KRF Accident in 72
The Tweet IP had been in C-130s at CCK for a while. Then he was at American the same time I was. We retired within a couple of months of each other. He's a good guy.

Re: KRF Accident in 72
Bob,

The date I have for the incident is 07-MAR-72. The T-37B involved was 59-0322.

Chris.

Chris the accident report says 0106Z on 19 Feb 72.
Tail numbers are correct

Re: LRF Accident
Mike,

Good to hear from someone that was with the 345th at the same time. Like you said, I don't remember you but I'm sure I must have flown with you. Wish I'd kept notes of who I flew with and where like some did. Thanks for the shout.

Dennis

LRF Accident
Speaking of keeping notes, I lost the notebook with all those great notes - does anyone know if there is a place where old squadron records are kept from CCK or 776th, etc. Those things should be old enough now to be declassified if they were, and would sure help some of the guys I read about here.

Re: LRF Accident
What I remember of the incident was, the Tweety was in sombodies front yard all balled up!! Just missed that house for sure and the Herk was in the woods behind it!!! The skeleton of that Herk all burned out I'll never forget!!! God bless all of our brothers and sisters who've gone down on our beloved Herk through the years!!!

Re: LRF Accident
Billstraw, I don't know if it'll help, but you might try the National Archives website. Lots of useless crap there. Surely, they keep good stuff, too. Oops! I forgot, I'm talking about the federal guvmint here.

Re: LRF Accident
Rich, I had to escort one of the remains to Chicago for burial. I don't wish that job on anybody.

Mike

Re: LRF Accident
Mike , I was there for the other crash too, can't remember the tail#. That one went in and just missed the phase dock, I think it was a Fin Stall but its way toooo many years ago now!!! God we Blew TAPS a lot during my 4 years....

Re: LRF Accident
The pilots on the midair were Edward Breen and Henry Thorsen. The fin stall was 69-6578 on 12 Nov 71.

Flew with the 37 pilot
I flew several times with the T-37 pilot. He was an instuctor at Webb AFB in Texas when I was going thru UPTin 1973. In fact I flew my cross country to Pete Field with him. He was a good stick and a very quiet guy.

Roy Nicolosi
The pilots on the t-37 were Capts Patrick and Norelius.

Re: LRF Accident
Bob, Do you have the number of casualties on 6578?? I think I remember that there was several students on board!! There was next to nothing left on that one.............

Rich Piacentine

Re: LRF Accident
Hi Rich
There were 10 on that one.
You can see the crew lists of all the Herk accidents, by clicking on Articles on top of this page, then click on Aircrew Losses.
Bob

Re: LRF Accident
Thorsen was the guy whose remains I escorted. Bad juju, Bwana. His mom wanted to open the casket.
I think the AC on the finstall was Raycraft.
The T-37 IP retired as a captain from AA around the same time I did, in July. He was a good guy, but I think that incident haunted him.

Mike

I had to pack up Ed Breen's belongings and furniture from his condo and ship it off to his parents. Not fun. All those things in the background after these accidents are haunting... But we also have all those funny stories and great adventures to BS about

My father-in-law still tells of great times and has partitioned off the bad ones from B-24s in WW2 and those were really up close and personal every day.

Re: LRF Midair
Yeah, I knew Ed pretty well. So you were at LRF then, too. Give me a shout at fma_71@hotmail.com.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (CNN) -- All four people aboard two U.S. Air Force training jets that collided Friday in southern Oklahoma survived the accident.

One of the T-37 training jets fell to the ground while the other made it safely back to Shepard Air Force Base in Texas, according to public affairs officials at the base.

The two people in the downed jet ejected safely before it crashed into a wheat field near Lake Waurika, Oklahoma, about 40 miles away from the base. They were taken to the Shepard base hospital.

The sheriff's office in Lake Waurika said it had no reports so far of damage to buildings or property being caused by the crash.

Shepard officials said the other jet landed at the base without the use of its landing gear. The two people on that plane were also taken to the base hospital.

No details were immediately available on whether any of the people sustained injuries, or on the nature or cause of the collision.

The base said a board of military officers would investigate the crash.

The T-37 is a twin-engine jet used mainly to train undergraduate pilots. It has dual controls and a clamshell-type canopy that allows a student and instructor to sit side-by-side in the cockpit. The planes first entered service in 1956.

Hani bayramda gelecektin
