 . . . I also witnessed the crash of XX831 when I was stationed at RAF Lossiemouth. The aircraft had been suffering from control problems and had been in our Hangar (ASF) for ages after problems from when it had been delivered from Warton. It probably had less than 20 hours on it from new!

 I remarked to my colleague (a Corporal Pete Whale) that there was a spare seat in the back, and could have taken one of the ground crew up!

Minutes later we saw it barrel-rolling along the runway, then a flash (rocket pack) as the seat went off. The aircraft crashed into a farm some two miles from the runway, taking out a barn and leaving a rather large hole.

It was the PSP in the back seat had become dislodged and jammed the rear stick over, therefore the pilot could not get the stick back to neutral....the seat apron had to be re-designed!"

Bill Langworthy in his Jaguar 14 Dec 1976.  Bill and his twin brother Dick and myself all joined the RAF on the same day in 1953 and went through training together. Bill described this as the shortest flight he had ever made. He was test flying an aircraft in which the roll control had not been re-connected. A photograph of the resulting crater was subsequently used as the frontispiece of the RAF's manual of enquiry into aircraft accidents. He figures as an earlier ejectee on 5 May 1961.

I found your site while trying to find more information about the circumstances surrounding my father's death.  He was a pilot in the RAF flying a Jaguar on exercise from RAF Bruggen, West Germany, to Sardinia.  I was wondering if you had more information about the accident or if you can tell me where you got the information from.

He was called Roger West (Flight Lieutenant) and the accident was on July 25th 1978, I was only 8 years old at the time and so wasn't told very much about it.  I have always wanted to find out more but been a little apprehensive about what I might find out, but now 30 years later I think the time is right.

No. 2 engine ignited fuel leaking from a failed No. 1 engine during an emergency landing at Boscombe Down. Crashed onto open farm land.

Sqn. Ldr. Tim N. Allen ejected and landed on the Chemical Research Establishment at Poron Down

Joe Jackson apparently (19/ 04 /1983) was at 28,000 feet to rendezvous with a tanker when he gave an uncommanded roll. He should have ejected above 10,000 feet, I was the last person to work on EF.Also,when he was killed in Feb 1984 he was a 6 Sqn pilot,though he may have been flying 14 Sqn jag.

Loss of control. Crashed into the North Sea, 20m E Cromer thirty miles north of Coltishall, Norfolk

"The  a/c was on a low-level training flight from Hahn and was crewed by Flt Lt  Paul Nelson with Lt Jerry Black in the back seat.  They struck some cables  and the a/c began to roll rapidly.  Paul called for the ejection and Jerry described having to look down for the handle and when he looked up and  pulled he could see only green and didn't expect to survive, but the a/c  was rolling so fast by then that he left the a/c almost straight up.  He  sustained only minor injuries.  Unfortunately for Paul he ejected straight  into the side of the hill without seat-separation. . . ."
