FEEDBACK	I witnessed this crash during a CENTO Weapons Demo in Cyprus. The pilot broke his leg on ejection and was lying incapacitated in the burning wreckage as a result, on the sports field at RAF Episkopi. A PTI (Physical Training Instructor) saw his predicament and rushed into the wreckage, receiving a medal for his bravery. I clearly remember them trying to reconstruct the circumstances of his injurious ejection using a crane at RAF Akrotiri, trying to work out how it happened (if only I'd taken pictures....) I believe the engine failure, more correctly loss of thrust, was due to a water pump failure of the water injection system, a 50 gallon tank aft of the engine compartment that was always used during hover activities, especially in the 30 degree heat of Cyprus.

FEEDBACK	Some information on one of your Harrier ejections from a 4 Sqn cab. I was at Wildenrath at the time and was actually on the crash guard for the crash at Vredepeel. I have added all of the information that I can recall and I hope this is of some use to you. The bulk of the wreckage was in a single field and less than 50 meters from a dwelling. 24 Jan 1974, Harrier GR3 XV797/H, 4 Sqn Crashed at Vredepeel, Netherlands after fuel pump failure pilot ejected but was killed when his parachute harness failed. The parachute harness failure was a problem with the Koch fastener that connected the seta harness to the pilots survival vest. Following investigation it was discovered that in some conditions the movement of the pilots body during ejection could unlock the fastener. There was a hasty modification to introduce a more positive lock to the fastener. Up until this time ground crew strapping in a pilot did a simple rattle and tug check to ensure both of the fasteners were secure. As an aside I believe the pilot was Flt Lt Revell, and he was in a two ship sortie at the time wit a Flt Lt Blotsam (I think the spelling is correct) also of 4 Sqn. The pilot of the second ship was killed later in a failed ejection at RAF Wildenrath when he ejected after the aircraft reared as he used the nozzles to brake a landing. The pilot ejected but due to the high nose up attitude of the aircraft the seat went into the runway at Wildenrath. I am unsure of the date and the aircraft serial but it was just after Easter 2004. The cause of the Harrier rearing up was the front reaction nozzle being partly open and the blast from the nozzle threw the harrier nose up. in email 29th October 2007

FEEDBACK	Attached is a photo I took myself of Flt Lt Steve Wakely when he was on 4 Sqn. He was unfortunately killed when he ejected from Harrier XV746/08 in Norway on 12/3/76. Although a 1 Sqn exercise (Atlas Express), I think he was actually an 233 OCU pilot attached to the Sqn. He was flying a low-level sortie in snow covered terrain and it was concluded an 'in-cockpit' task distracted him. Realising he was too close to rising ground, he ejected, but struck the ground before the seat/parachute sequence was completed. Regards Pete Mears in email 19th April 2008

	Apparently, the closing angles of the 2 aircraft were such that the pilots didn't see it coming until it was too late. Bruce was in the rear cockpit, sitting higher, the young F/O in the front was able to eject successfully.

FEEDBACK	". . . Wing Commander Nick Slater and was killed in a Harrier crash on 1st June 1995. You seem to have a yellow box with Solway Firth written as the place that he was based. I thought you might like to know that this is incorrect. He was based and RAF Boscombe Down and this is where his last flight took off from. He was Commanding Officer of the test flight squadron as far as I can remember - I was just 9 when he died. The engine failed and he crashed into the sea without ejection. My grandmother was told that if he had ejected then there was a good chance that the plane would have crashed into a nearby static caravan site on the Scottish coast and so the RAF believe that he made a choice to stay with the plane and not that the ejection failed.
