Luftwaffe M-B Ejections The first emergency ejection from a German Air Force F-104G Starfighter equipped with a Martin-Baker GQ7A seat took place at Ramstein AFB on September 24. A pilot whose aircraft overshot the runway on landing operated his seat in a ground-level ejection at a speed of about 40kt and landed unhurt. Four hours later there was a second emergency ejection from a GAF F-104G, also fitted with a GQ7A seat, the pilot abandoning his aircraft at about 6,000ft and landing safely. Delivery of Martin-Baker seats to the German Air Force began towards the end of 1967 and it is estimated that at least 70 per cent of the F-104Gs have now been converted. "Hard landing, left runway at Lechfeld A/D. 1st Lt Rolf Chur ejected successfully ( he
is listed as only "leaving the Runway", however on a very hard touchdown during
a night landing the left main undercarriage collapsed. The pilot landed in a
barbed wire fence around the HAS area and had to be freed by the fire brigade -
but first they had to find him since nobody had noticed the ejection and the
firemen were quite astonished o finding an empty cockpit at the airplane!)." WL |

A true miracle: the pilot, ! The seat was activated by the cockpit-bottom being ripped off and thereby activating the rocket pack - which normally fires last. Mercifully everything else worked forward, not backwards! He was knocked unconscious for almost two weeks when he lost his helmet on "ejection" and landed on the concrete apron, but regained flying status again only to... see 18-07-83 |

NOTES & FEEDBACK TO ADD / AMEND IN THE ABOVE LISTING |
|
|
Notes from Wolfgang Leuthner's original translated material |
Some additional remarks concerning the list: - The tactical callsigns of airplanes til end of March 1968 used to show the role and unit of the a/c by means of the two letters in front:
B. would be a training unit BB = WaSLw 10 at Jever airdrome
D. would be all fighterbombers DA = JaboG 31 "Boelcke" at Nörvenich airdrome DB = JaboG 32 at Lechfeld airdrome DC = JaboG 33 at Büchel airdrome DD = JaboG 34 at Memmingen airdrome DF = JaboG 36 at Rheine-Hopsten airdrome
E. would be all Reconnaissance EA = Aufklärungsgeschwader 51 "Immelmann", initially at Ingolstadt/Manching, from 1970 then at Bremgarten airdrome (near Freiburg/Breisgau) EB = Aufklärungsgeschwader 52 at Leck airdrome
J. would be all fighters JA = Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" at Wittmund airdrome JD = Jagdgeschwader 74 "Mölders" at Neudurg/Donau airdrome
V. would be all naval Starfighters VA = Marinefliegergeschwader 1 at Schleswig/Jagel VB = Marinefliegergeschwader 2 at Eggebek It also seems that the Navy marked their two-seat-trainers with TA suffixes at Jagel and TB at Eggebek respectively.
From 1968 onwards all Starfighter tactical callsigns consisted of a 4-digit number which always had "2" as first digit, but did not show role or unit anymore.
- Other units to maintain Starfighters were: UEK Decimomannu on Sardinia They had a pool of airplanes from all Geschwaders that were using Frasca Range. Therefore sometimes, when the unit of a crashed airplane is not given correctly it most probably was on lease to Deci. 4510 CCTW/51 TFTW at Luke AFB / Arizona They maintained German-owned, but USAF-registered Starfighters for the conversion training of all German Starfighter-trainees. MBB Manching They did all the periodic Inspections and large overhaul for Luftwaffe and Marine at Ingolstadt/Manching airdrome. WTD 61, also at Manching They did flight-testing and modifications. Some 104s were also used for chasing testflights of new types (like i.e. Tornado). LVR 1 at Erding Airbase From it´s role LVR 1 is a supply-unit but as "owner" of the Erding A/D they got to operate a pool of Starfighters from units already converted to Tornados. The planes were flown by pilots of Geschwaders in conversion to the new plane, who were not yet sent to RAF Cottesmore.
