FEEDBACK

".  .  .  . I was the duty officer that day and remember that the weather was awful and he had been vectored around while the Air Force..(they ran Naha airfield) got his wingman out of the arresting gear. At the time, we had to take the arresting gear when it rained, because they had recently resurfaced the runway and it was incredibly slippery when it rained...it was 8000 feet long and that wasn't long enough when wet....Anyway, it took them too long to clear his wingman and then they changed the runway direction and Paul ran out of gas...They started to send him to Kadena, but for some reason Kadena couldn't take him, so he wasted some more fuel starting over there and then having to come back. He landed on the last island...(very small one)...between Okinawa and China."
"Paul went on to fly over 1000 hours in the F8, quite an accomplishment"

I am hoping you can provide some information on my father, Harry G. Barnes, Jr. USN. He was involved as a pilot in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was killed in an F-8 crash in 1969, and my mother remembers very few details of his involvement. I am hoping I can find out more to pass on the stories to his grandchildren. My Mom mentioned a nickname of "Piper Cub Killer" one time, but now doesn't recall that.

Any information would be helpful.

I'll make a short story of my ditching:  VF-53, Bon Homme Richard, Gulf of Tonkin, dawn of May 4,1969, hot weather and heavy F8J ( Buno 150877) requiring a burner shot.  Burner blew out on the cat shot. Would not relight and nozzles failed open. Couldn’t accelerate or climb.  Alternate handle would not unseat and my sitting height with the seat pack installed at the time, was too tall to use the face curtain.. Flew for almost two minutes.   Maintained wings level.  Got canopy off just at impact.  Aircraft sank immediately.  Don't know if it broke up but suspect it did.  Egress procedure didn't work. Undid leg garters, lap and shoulder fittings, got out of cockpit.  Had forgotten emergency O2 was in seat pan so was pulled deeper by mask until I could break the connection.  Helo pick up.

Lcdr at the time.

Re:  18 June 1969 Crash of F-8 Crusader

Hello,

At the time, my family lived in Grand Prairie, Texas, a couple of miles from the crash site (NAS Dallas). I recall the incident reasonably well, even after all of these years. I could see the smoke plume plainly from the driveway of my parent's home.

My dad was working in his company's office across the street from the end of the NAS runway. As I remember, the plane was reported to have crashed promptly upon takeoff, skidding beyond the end of the runway, tearing through a couple of chain-link security fences, skidding across perhaps four lanes of a very busy street, and into the parking lot of my dad's office before coming to rest. My dad's car, a hard-top convertible, was destroyed.

The error: I believe that the pilot was a U.S. Marine Corps Captain, not U.S. Navy, as reported on your webpage. I recall that he was killed; ejecting too low for his parachute to deploy properly. I don't believe that there were any other human casualties, amazingly.

Regards,

It was an RF-8G to VFP-63 Det. 34 aboard the USS Oriskany CVA-34.

The date was November 14, 1970 in the Gulf of Tonkin S.E. Asia. While at flight daytime flight opps. while being catapulted for take off, one of the main landing gear struts collapsed causing the aircraft to bank on take off.

Lt. Joseph R. Klugg ejected at low altitude at an angle that did not allow the seat to gain vertical height, causing the seat to ditch with Lt. Klugg still strapped in.

Rescue divers were not able to get to him before it went too deep to effect rescue. Body not recovered.

Lt. Kluggs home town was Okemos, Michigan."

"   .   .   .   The a/c took and suffered a compressor stall sending flames shooting out about 30 feet as the a/c continued to climb. The F-8was loaded with ordnance. The a/c was heading to the south. The pilot ejected and his chute opened as normal, however the pilot was not attached to the harness.

The a/c made a slow turn to the left (east) and crashed into either Marble or Monkey mountain. The pilot landed on the runway and did not survive the ejection.

I was with the 18th SOS Det 1 at the time."
