".  .  .  . I was the duty officer that day and remember that the weather was awful and he had been vectored around while the Air Force..(they ran Naha airfield) got his wingman out of the arresting gear. At the time, we had to take the arresting gear when it rained, because they had recently resurfaced the runway and it was incredibly slippery when it rained...it was 8000 feet long and that wasn't long enough when wet....Anyway, it took them too long to clear his wingman and then they changed the runway direction and Paul ran out of gas...They started to send him to Kadena, but for some reason Kadena couldn't take him, so he wasted some more fuel starting over there and then having to come back. He landed on the last island...(very small one)...between Okinawa and China."
"Paul went on to fly over 1000 hours in the F8, quite an accomplishment"

I'll make a short story of my ditching:  VF-53, Bon Homme Richard, Gulf of Tonkin, dawn of May 4,1969, hot weather and heavy F8J ( Buno 150877) requiring a burner shot.  Burner blew out on the cat shot. Would not relight and nozzles failed open. Couldn’t accelerate or climb.  Alternate handle would not unseat and my sitting height with the seat pack installed at the time, was too tall to use the face curtain.. Flew for almost two minutes.   Maintained wings level.  Got canopy off just at impact.  Aircraft sank immediately.  Don’t know if it broke up but suspect it did.  Egress procedure didn't work. Undid leg garters, lap and shoulder fittings, got out of cockpit.  Had forgotten emergency O2 was in seat pan so was pulled deeper by mask until I could break the connection.  Helo pick up.

Just did a fast recon of your site for my period, I'll look again when I have time, was looking for FC Green in an F-8H off Shang in 1970. Friend of mine. You can find the date of that by Google VF-111 Shangri-La Cruise 1970...it is on the first page of an article about that cruise, gives date of the VF-162 loss;
