FEEDBACK

On 14 May 1958 M B "Buck " Peck was leading a flight of 4 FJ-4's on a high altitude (40,000') sidewinder practice mission over the China Lake gunnery range.  We were flying out of MCAS Mojave.  This was part of a combat readiness inspection and we were accompanied by a Major, ( Don't recall his name at this time.) to observe and grade us.

Buck had briefed us before hand that since it was uncomfortable and put a negative load on the A/C he would fire the target 5" rocket from a slightly nose high attitude at 43,000' and then roll over and track the target rocket with the sidewinder by putting positive g's on the A/C.  This he did, but when he fired the sidewinder, it hung up on the rail.  The ensuing thrust of the sidewinder put him into an inverted flat spin, plus all that thrust sprung the wet wing enough so that fuel escaped and caught fire.  I was flying B/N 139464 on his wing and could see  that he was having a difficult time figuring out what to do and told him to eject.  As luck would have it, as soon as he ejected, the A/C roll right side up and flew into the ground in almost a level attitude.  It was a good ejection and the first time, (only time) that the automatic parachute opener was used.

He was picked up by the rescue chopper out of Edwards in fine shape except that he lost his Rolex watch when the chute opened.

FEEDBACK

Dear Mike:

I can tell you a bit more about the July '58 ejection by my father, (then)   Ltjg W. C. Hicklin.  He was with VA-192 "Golden Dragons" aboard USS   Bonhomme Richard (CVA-31). Almost immediately after launch, his cockpit   filled with smoke and the tower simultaneously told him his aircraft was on fire: he ejected, landed in the drink and, tangled in his parachute cords, nearly drowned before he cut himself free and was rescued by the   plane-guard destroyer.  The cause was determined to have been  (unsurprisingly) 'engine fire'.

Cheers,

Bill Hicklin

"Engine seized during break, ejected at approx 300 kts, through the canopy at less than 500ft.  Pulled face curtain and D ring at the same time and got about one swing after chute opening.  Three cracked vertebrae between the shoulder blades.  Itís still the best plane that I ever flew."

FEEDBACK

". . . His plane, BuNo 139291, was an FJ-4B Fury and crashed on Otay Mtn. just outside San Diego, CA, near Brown Field which was a NAS at that time. The remains of his plane are still on the side of the mountain nearly 50 years later. Part of the reason is that it is on the border with Mexico and heavily patrolled by the Border Patrol. Also the area is full of rattlesnakes. So not too much of the wreckage has been tampered with. I visited the site year before last with Pat Macha. . . "

FEEDBACK

Following is the scenario of the ejection by Lt. C. J. Herda on February 18. 1963. Our squadron, VF-725, a Naval Reserve outfit based in NAS Glenview, Illinois just north of Chicago was on 2 weeks annual active duty at NAS Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico. We were flying FJ-4B fighter-bombers equipped with Martin-Baker ejection seats. On this deployment we were to fire one Sidewinder missile per pilot. The practice shoot excercise was to fire a 5" HVAR target rocket from the left wing and track and shoot the Sidewinder from the right wing. A wingman was to count off the seconds after the HVAR was launched because there was a small window of about 6-8 seconds in which the Sidewinder was effectively in range. As I was the only pilot who had ever fired one previously I asked that I be on hand for safety purposes while loading the missiles. Of course, I was on liberty on the day when  the squadron was given some range time and the go-ahead was given by senior authorities. There was a safety clip that secured the Sidewinder on its rail which had to be removed before flight and sure enough the clip was left in. When Lt Herda fired the target rocket and then fired the Sidewinder it lit off, but couldn't leave the rail and off he went with this powerful "engine" out on wing station 6 blazing away and sending the aircraft into some out of control "whifferdills". The chase pilot who was photographing the event dropped his camera in order to get the hell out of the way (amusing pictures which we all saw later on). Chuck afraid that the plane might come apart ejected safely. Naturally, at the O'club that evening we all had a few laughs.

FEEDBACK

This is about the ejection by Lt. Don "Skip" Mellem on September 5, 1963; again VF-725 based at NAS Glenview, Illinois flying FJ-4Bs. I had a day off from civilian pursuits and decided to log some extra flight time and went to the airfield. Upon arriving maintenance said they had a "problem" aircraft and would I give it a test flight. After agreeing to do the test Lt. Mellem, also, showed up to get some extra time and I asked if he would fly wing in case anything went wrong and I had to eject. We were airborne about 30 minutes and determining that my fuel controller was "uncontrollable" I decided to get on the ground ASAP. When we arrived at the base I made a routine landing and Skip decided to practice some touch and go landings as he still had considerable fuel on board. As I left the runway and was taxing back to the line, Skip's plane went by with a hi nose up attitude and I thought that with about half a fuel load he was just showing off. As he went by me the tower declared an emergency with all planes and vehicles stopping in place. I angled my plane and could see some smoke to the north of the airbase. When Skip pushed forward on the throttle the turbine blades let go and basically the engine lost power. He ejected about 700" or 800" above ground and the plane went into the living room of a house just off the Navy base. A  woman in the house managed to escape out of her kitchen door. By the time I got back to the line Skip had been recovered and was "as white as a sheep" with concern about the occupants of the house. About 30 years later there was a newspaper article in which the family talked about their mother's adventure and Skip called and identified himself as the pilot. Well, they had a happy reunion a few weeks later and toasted everybody's good fortune. That's the way I saw it and am sticking to the story.
