You listed two VF-21 aircraft on 29 January, 1973.  This was our sister squadron on our West Pac cruise.  The first listing you have as an operation loss and the second one that day as a mid air with a tanker at night.  That's not the way I remember it as was told on the ship the next day.  We were launching night ops and bombing Hanoi or providing air cover for the bombings.  .  This was part of the bombing push to try and end the war.  The word on the ship was that the two VF-21 planes had a mid air over Hai Phong harbor.  I thought that they lost two planes and got one aircrew back.  You list a Lt. Reid as recovered and he is pictured on the Ranger cruise book but his pilot is not listed but he may have arrived after they took the pictures.  The last page of the cruise book  is "In Memoriam".  Listed as missing in Action a Lt. Phillip Clark, Jr.  The only way I can think of for a carrier  to have an MIA is that he must have been one of those missing names for the 29 Jan 73 operational loss.   There are 4 more officers listed on that page but you would have to track down their service records. If  you want to try to track down the missing names let me know and I can get you the names.  Hope this helps you fill in some blanks.

FEEDBACK

I was a 1st Lt at the time.  My WSO was 1st Lt Ron Price.  Ron was not injured.  I had two compression fractures of my back that took several months to heal.  That was because I had to fire the seat while holding full right rudder.

We had a massive fuselage fire just as we took off.  Within 10 seconds, we had lost both engines and the entire fuselage from just behind the cockpits was engulfed in flames with flames twice the length of the plane behind.  We ejected very low while sinking fast and rolling left.  I had an open chute about 2 seconds before hitting the water off the south end of the runway.  The water was 45F and the air was 42F.  We were picked up by a CH-53 in about half an hour as we were being carried rapidly out into the Yellow Sea.

I attached photos of me walking from the CH-53 to the ambulance and of Ron being picked up from his raft.  He was close to shore due to getting out at about 600 feet with the wind blowing onshore.  My seat fired when I was falling through 200 feet with 45 degrees of bank.  I was in the water immediately and in the center of the outflow of a large river with an outgoing tide.

[Submitted by - Pete Campo & Bob McManus] - F4 cold catshot, dips and then peals off to the starboard side, Lt in front seat hits the Martin Baker ejection seat and out he goes, chute deploys, splash, recover, pilot on board. Ltjg in rear seat, navigator, hits the button, up goes seat and co-pilot, no chute, down comes ejection seat, co- pilot still attached. We search for 8 hours until Captain "Paul" Peck calls off search and announces to ships crew that said Ltjg died doing what he loved in life. That's all I remember...
