Lt. James R. Fegan,

Vic Smith and I were both F-4 pilots though I was a back seater.

(My orders for the front seat came down the same day I went down.)
Vic probably got out of the aircraft but either his seat was damage, malfunctioned,  or there wasn't enough time. (He was listed MIA then presumed dead.)

I got out but was badly injured arms and one leg.  One night out in Laos, surrounded  by bad guys, rescue the next day then 10 months hospital, 2 years surgery and did not fly again

Our airspeed was around 450 knots pulling out of a dive when we hit by 37mm that took off the right wing.  The air blast in the ejection took off my helmet and mask, some strapped on equipment and some whole pockets.  My injuries were probably flail injuries and in the air.  I don't know;  I woke up on the ground and had to figure things out from there.

The rescue is written up in the appendix of The Rescue of Bat 21 by Darrel D. Whitcomb .

update

05/02/69 – 64-0873 -this has a humorous story to it. RAF Lindholme Officers Mess had a ghost (allegedly) known as Lindholme Willie who used to walk the corridors in WWII flying kit – this was against the rules/etiquette and anyone who saw him would turn to tell him so, by which time he had disappeared. On the night of the F-4 crash the duty runway controller was sitting in his old mobile caravan waiting for the last Hastings to land, the weather was misty as normal from the marshy area to the east of the airfield, he heard a knock at the door and standing in the mist and in very poor light only lit by the red light atop the van stood one F-4 pilot in full flying gear slightly muddy with parachute, the controller an oldish Cpl leapt from the van and sprinted nearly a mile to the ATC tower and took several days to get over the shock, but I expect the pilot did as well. ( Well that’s the story I heard from someone who was in the tower that night!) As an aside question – the RAF limit pilots to 3 ejections because of the vertebrae compression – is the standard in the West?

On February 10, 1969, I was the instructor pilot flying F-4J BuNo. 153811 out of VF-101 (East Coast RAG) in Key West, Florida. My RIO was a nugget NFO, Radleigh Speerschneider. We had just completed a simulated intercept when the right fire warning light came on. Things deteriorated from there and after the Squadron Safety Officer (in the other Phantom) gained visual on me, confirmed that we were on fire and recommended ejection, we both ejected successfully. The Aircraft Mishap Board concluded that the fire was most probably caused by spontaneous combustion at a pinhole leak in the hydraulics system,

The other Phantom that went down that day was out of VF-121 (West Coast RAG) at Miramar California. It also had a fire which I believe was caused by a problem in the fuel venting system. I know that Dan Pederson (check your spelling, I believe that mine is correct) was flying it and that both crewmen ejected successfully. I believe that Lt Sliney was in his back seat but didn’t know him and never talked with him.

Coincidentally, Dan was the West Coast Phantom Air Combat Maneuvering Phase Leader and I was his East Coast counterpart.

By the way, since we used the new command ejection seats, neither Rad nor myself ever got Caterpiller Pins.

Speed is life, and when you have them by the gonads their hearts and minds will follow,

Jeff
