20th October 1954 Grumman XF9F-9 138604 Grumman Calverton facility Crashed near Grumman on Long Island. Damaged beyond repair LCdr W. H. Livingston

[is this the same person as Rear Admiral W. H. Livingston ?]

"   .   .   .   Thank you for the "sneak preview" of the Grumman Tiger list.  I suspect that some of the 1958-59 losses were VA-156, which for reasons still unknown became VF-111 in '59.

4. June 1956 VA-156 Established at NAS Moffett Field CA
20. January 1959 VA-156 was redesignated VF-111
1. September 1964 VF-111 was redesignated VF-26
17. September 1964 VF-26 was redesignated VF-111
31. May 1995 VF-111 Disestablished at NAS North Island CA.

Note that the F11F-1 (versus F-11F-1) became the F-11A in September 62.  (McKee in Jan 60 would've been in an F11F-1.  Harvey in Oct 62 would have been F-11A.)

Ref. the 1961 Blue Angel loss.  Walla Walla, Washington is about 20 miles from my home town.  I learned to fly at a small field nearby.  The passenger, Jim Schick, was a reporter and later an editor for the local newspaper, the Union Bulletin.  There were no two-seat Tigers so the plane used to give rides undoubtedly was an F9F-8T. The pilot's name appears on the 1961 roster as Ventimiglia.

FEEDBACK

".   .   .   For years I have searched for information about this crash as I was an eleven year old boy at the time and came upon the crash with my mother and brother very soon after the crash occurred.  Lt. Neale's aircraft barely missed a house and he stayed with the aircraft until the very last second.  He was trying to make the airport in Apalachicola which has  5,000 foot concrete runways.  He almost made the 18/36 runway.  I have vivid memories of the crash site.  Len Mozey tells me he lost a turbine blade which went out through the engine and through a fuel cell.  Thus causing the engine stoppage.  As I recall there was no fire or very little fire at the crash.  Perhaps the engine had cooled by the time of the crash.

Local lore in Apalachicola at the time is that the aircraft was over Carrabelle Florida at the time, 22 miles out from the airport in Apalachicola.  Lt. Neale must have thought he could make the airport.  Len mentioned that there was a strong headwind the pilot didn't know about as the airport has no tower or ATC.

Any further information you have on this or the Grumman seat in that aircraft would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Wallace
